As a young student in the mid-1960s, the Danish sculptor Anders Tinsbo was used to working with solid matter –
“The lump” or “klumpen” as he called it in Danish.
Then, he noticed something strange…
As he said himself, his “sculptures had started to open themselves – holes had started to appear in them”
Over the next thirty years, the hole became bigger, and bigger
The lump of the sculptures struggled to compete against the hole – breaking through them to create what Tinsbo called an edge
An edge, which became thinner and thinner
Until all that was left, was a line
And finally, just a strip of light
The story of Tinsbo’s work is the story of this negotiation between the lump and the hole. We find that what Tinsbo was left with, was really what he began with.
The strangeness and aliveness of space.
