the Edge

As the hole becomes bigger and bigger, the lump is transformed into “the edge” in Tinsbo’s words. The effect of the “taut edge” as Tinsbo describes it, is a feeling of movement. For Tinsbo, because of the tension in the twisting shape, the sculpture constantly changes.

Newspaper reviews tell us that this affected the way viewers interacted with Tinsbo’s sculpture, encouraging them to move around it, matching its rhythm. More than simply moving around the work, in a 1973 review, Berlingske’s critic described that the “full impact” of the works is “only achieved through touching the very smooth forms and curves, which seem to live a life of their own.”

Tinsbo articulated his understanding of space and matter as living entities in lofty, theoretical terms. For the viewer, this translated as a surprisingly simple experience. They were driven to move with and even touch the work, as if interacting with a living creature.
