Mobiles
The struggle between the lump and the hole was stretched to the limit with the mobiles Tinsbo started making in 1970. The heavy mass of the early sculptures has been stretched into something almost weightless.
The mobiles fulfilled the promise of movement in Tinsbo’s earlier sculptures, which created the strong impression of movement, and provoked movement in the viewer but were not literally moving. The mobiles however, were often in constant movement, twirling and twisting from long wires or from supports in the ground.
“Mobile” is in fact not quite the right word as Tinsbo said. For him, these were the same as his sculptures. “Since I always wanted sculptures not to stand on the ground but to float in mid-air,” Tinsbo said, the mobiles were simply “forms floating in space.” These were the fulfilment of the illusion created with Vandkunst, where the wet stone made the sculpture seem to “float”.
